This Week’s Question:
Queen Elizabeth spent most of this week in the Republic of Ireland. She’s the first monarch to pay an official visit to the Republic (since it became a Republic) but her predecessors certainly dropped in on the territory from time to time. Who was the last British monarch to officially visit the area of Ireland now known as The Republic of Ireland?
Last Week’s Question:
On May 12, 1937, George VI and his wife, Elizabeth, were crowned King and Queen. What unusual event took place at the coronation?
Answer: Dowager Queen Mary attended. Previous queens had sat out the coronations of the next monarch, but after the Abdication Crisis, Mary wanted to show her support for her son. Reader Mary Benedict got this one right—well done, Mary!
I’m not sure about this, but it’s possible this was also the first coronation to be fully filmed. I’m fairly certain it was the first to be filmed in Technicolor, which was a fairly new technology at the time.
George V.
I love your website! I found it looking for Pillars of the Earth recaps. (I started watching it last night on Starz, but it was the 3rd episode, so I needed to catch up.)
